Large and nice antique copper engraved map of  Provence in France, by Matheus SEUTTER (1678-1757). This map depicts the coastal area from the mouth of the Rhone along to Marseille and Monaco, including Avignon and the route of the Durance River. 

There is two large and nice cartouches in the bottom: the one on the left features the title and the coats of arms of the region, with Hercules and a Roman soldier; the one on the right features a landscape showing Justice directing avenging angels, including the Angel of Death above a field scattered with the dead, while Gaia weeps over the sad scene.



Matheus SEUTTER began his career as an apprentice under tutelage of JB Homann. Then, he left Homann to establish his own independent cartographic publishing firm in Augsburg. 

He was one of the most prolific publishers of his time and was honored by the German Emperor Charles VI, with the title of "Imperial Geographer".
