Holton H104  Horn

Description

This is Holton's finest French horn, the Barry Tuckwell model.

I tried a new one in a store a long time ago and was impressed by its excellence. Later, when I had a chance to come across a used one, I acquired it and used it as my main instrument.

What is noteworthy is its sound quality. The sound is based on the deep and warm sound of a Holton in its prime, rich in overtones and silky smooth, and as far as I know, I feel that this is a wonderful sound that is unmatched by many others. It is also very sensitive to the breath, and even when blowing hard, the sound does not break up, so you can play from pp to ff with great expressiveness.

The pitch is a little low overall, so when I play at 442 Hz, which is what I usually play, I don't pull out the main winds too much, but there are no particular notes or ranges where the pitch is out of tune. The tone point is also firm, and there are no notes that are particularly difficult to hit throughout the entire range.
The mouthpipe of this model is interchangeable, and the one currently installed is the BT4. Generally, the BT1 is for chamber music, and the BT4 is for regular use.
Since this is not an early model, there is no concern about the bell-cut joint screws.

As for the overall condition, as you can see in the photos, the exterior has lacquer scratches, minor dents, and correction marks due to use over time, so it may not be a beautiful instrument, but there is no damage that would interfere with playing.
The instrument was disassembled and cleaned last year, and the inside is clean enough.
Of course, there are no parts that interfere with the operation of the instrument, so it is ready to be used as is.
