SHOE LACE AGLETS

These blue aglets (shoelace ends) are perfect for making your own shoe laces, shortening laces or repairing laces that have lost their tips. They are very easy to attach. The end of the lace (or ribbon) is inserted into the aglet, which has an inbuilt shrinking action when heat is applied, and they will typically shrink down to about half their initial diameter.  Hair straighteners,  a naked flame or boiling water are all viable heat applications to shrink them although more information will be sent with your order. The aglets are available in this listing in the following (unshrunk) diameters:
  • 4.8 mm (reducing to approx. 2.4 mm when shrunk)
  • 3.2 mm (reducing to approx 1.6 mm when shrunk)
One aglet is typically 20 mm long (approximately 0.75 inch) although unless you advise us to the contrary, your order will be dispatched in a single length based on the ordered quantity multiplied by 20 mm. This will minimise wastage by enabling you to cut the aglet to the exact size you require as laces differ greatly in actual aglet length.  Please note that the stated diameter sizes are the internal measurement. If you have not previously used this type of aglet, we can offer the following advice by way of guidance:
  • The 3.2 mm aglets are typically suitable for medium thick laces including round, oval and some flat laces
  • The 4.8 mm aglets are typically suitable for broader flat laces, most ribbons and thicker, medium duty laces
  • If you have very narrow laces we have 2.4 mm clear aglets, or for very thick ribbons and/or heavy duty laces, we have 6.4 mm clear aglets. You can view these in our other items or just enter the item number 282507435894 in the search box.

If you are unsure which size to purchase, you can always contact us for help via the Ebay message system. It is in any event important to try and buy the smallest unshrunk diameter that you think will accept the end of your lace or ribbon. This will give the best, neatest and tightest fitting result. If you are still unsure, we offer a "Full House" option and this will be a quantity of each diameter. Please note we also have black, green, white, red and yellow aglets in separate listings.

It is important for you to be aware that the aglets on commercially produced laces, such as those that come with new shoes, are produced using ultrasonic heating or plastic moulding machines that cost hundreds of thousands of pounds. It is consequently unlikely that your home produced laces/aglets will have a similar professional quality but the use of this heat shrink method is however universally accepted as a safe and, to most people, reasonable alternative.
