Tukula or twool is the product of grinding African sandalwood powder, used dry or mixed with oil for application. To the Kuba people of the Congo it is an immensely valuable substance. Its earthy or purplish red color is used abundantly in decoration, both cosmetic and ritual. This piece is from the 1960s.

Lidded boxes such as these functioned as storage vessels for tukula. This traditional wooden container half-moon in shape. They are each uniquely hand carved and treasured for their artistry (see images). The wood has a very dark, hand hewn and has a nice patina. There is a small old chip that I have shown in images that does not distract when lid is on (see images).
