The Sphere; An Illustrated Newspaper for the Home, Vol CLXXXII to CLXXXIII, during  and after World War II, is a must-have for collectors of rare and original books.

The Sphere was a British illustrated newspaper issued weekly, which ran from 1900 to 1964. It was in direct competition with The Graphic and Illustrated London News.

   The Sphere also contained high quality engravings, produced by renowned artists and featured accomplished writers.

Those featured in The Sphere were by renowned artists including WG Whitaker and Montague and Montague Dawson. Other illustrators included Sidney Paget, Henry Mathew Brock, Fortunino Matania, Ernest Prater, Edmund Blampield,Victor Coverlet Price and Claude Graham Muncaster. Photographers includedd Cristina Broom; and writes included Bryher, Eleanor Sinclair Rhide, and Michael Wolf, and Balkans war heroine Dr Caroline Matthews. Thomas Hardy's short story A Changed Man was first published in The Sphere,  in two instalments in the 21 and 28 April 1900 editions.

The Sphere was very much a publication of The British Empire,  and the stories contained within focused on British interest at home and around the world. 

This volume has a substantial coverage of after the war from July 07 1945 to December 29 1945.

Issues of the Sphere are surprisingly uncommon, as so many have been completely pulled apart in order to sell individual images, so it is lovely to find a large run  like this, especially covering the tormented years of the greats and most horrific conflict of humanity so far, showing how the Britain live, work and fought in all those years.

This hardback edition, printed in the United Kingdom in 1941, is a first edition and a great addition to any history and military enthusiast's collection. Its weight of 2.8kg signifies the quality of its contents.

Large format hardback bindings with cloth covering. Covers are worn,bumped, and rubbed. Inside most of the text pages are actually very good. They are generally clean and in nice condition for a weekly of this age. There will be flaws -occasional page tears, foxing, stamps, creasing, but still a wonderful piece of history to have!
