Rosemary McGuirk was born and raised in lower Westchester County, New York. She attended St. Joseph's Grammar School in Bronxville and School of the Holy Child in Rye. In 1980, she earned her B.A. in Art from the University of Richmond. She continued her studies of art at the College of New Rochelle, The School of Visual Arts, and the Art Student's League by night and worked at her father's Ford dealership and later at McCall's and Family Circle magazines by day.

The early experiences of her childhood in the suburbs, at her grandmother's in Chester, Vermont, and now raising her own family, are evident in the childlike and playful images that come to life in her unique and meticulous cut paper scenes.
