About this NAT 02

I remember a Hi-Fi journalist (possibly the late, lamented LJK Setright) once writing that all you really needed for the perfect reproduction of music at home was a decent FM tuner, tuned to Radio 3, with an outdoor aerial.  Listening to this Naim tuner, I can see his point. It really is a wonderful thing.

This particular example is in exceptional condition and has been fastidiously looked after. We’ve contacted Naim and they stated that it had a service with them in November 2000 but have no more specific details.

It’s in perfect working order with every element of the display lighting up and varying in brightness on signal strength. The main logo lights up perfectly, too. It tunes smoothly, holds the station without drifting, mutes correctly between stations and is still a joy to use.

Cosmetically the condition is excellent with unblemished front, rear and an exceptionally clean sleeve. Please see the photos to make a personal appraisal and see just how clean this example is.

As well as being in exceptional condition, this particular NAT 02 is rare in coming complete with all its accessories. These include the instruction manual, MK mains plug and Naim ‘lavender’ interconnect with a lock ring at the amp end (making it suitable for all ‘Olive’ and ‘Classic’ Naim amps).

It still has all its original packaging, including the box and foam/card inners.

About the NAT 02

Sold between 1989 and 2002, the Naim NAT 02 is descended directly from the legendary NAT 01. It was never replaced with a direct descendent. Unlike later Naim ’05’ tuners, the NAT 02 is a fully manual tuner and not a synthesiser type. This means that, like the NAT 01, there’s no auto-tuning or station scanning available. There are no presets, either. What there is, is simply superb sound quality.

As with all Naim tuners, the NAT 02 really does need to be used with a good quality aerial. They are less sensitive than other tuners, meaning an indoor aerial won’t get anything like the best out of the tuner - usually a mono signal at best. Hook up a decent aerial, though and it really sings. Better than any DAB+ or Internet radio by some margin.

Connections at the back are DIN output and 75ohm aerial input and the only controls are the tuning knob and power switch at the back. Less is more! Worth a note, the output is quite low, so it might not suit a passive pre-amp, unless it has a very low noise volume pot.

To give you an idea of the quality of this tuner, in 1997 it cost £1080, which would be well over £2000 in today’s money.
