Powdered milk, also called milk powder,[1] dried milk, or dry milk, is a manufactured dairy product made by evaporating milk to dryness. One purpose of drying milk is to preserve it; milk powder has a far longer shelf life than liquid milk and does not need to be refrigerated, due to its low moisture content. Another purpose is to reduce its bulk for the economy of transportation. Dirchoff in 1832. In 1855, T.S. Grimwade took a patent on a dried milk procedure,[5] though a William Newton had patented a vacuum drying process as early as 1837.[6] In modern times, powdered milk is usually made by spray drying[7] nonfat skimmed milk, whole milk, buttermilk or whey. Pasteurized milk is first concentrated in an evaporator to approximately 50 percent milk solids. Adulteration[edit] In the 2008 Chinese milk scandal, melamine adulterant was found in Sanlu infant formula, added to fool tests into reporting higher protein content. Thousands became ill, and some children died, after consuming the product. Contamination scare[edit] In August 2013, China temporarily suspended all milk powder imports from New Zealand, after a scare where botulism-causing bacteria was falsely detected in several batches of New Zealand-produced whey protein concentrate. As a result of the product recall, the New Zealand dollar slipped significantly[quantify] based on expected losses in sales from this single commodity.[19] Use in biotechnology[edit] Fat-free powdered milk is used as a saturating agent to block nonspecific binding sites on supports like blotting membranes (nitrocellulose, polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) or nylon),[20] preventing binding of further detection reagents and subsequent background.[21] It may be referred as Blotto. At 7, her parents took her to the Barnum and Bailey Circus at Franklin Field. Chrisman became determined she would perform with many kinds of animals. When she was 22, she won the World Champion Girl Bronc Rider title. She became skilled as a trick rider and shooter. She seemed fated to star in the type of shows she attended as a child.[2] Career[edit] However, Chrisman was not born to a cowgirl life. She dropped out of an East Coast finishing school to join the Miller Brothers 101 Ranch show. Chrisman performed for years in the rodeo, wild west show, circus, and other venue circuits for years. It was at the 101 Ranch show that she met her husband-to-be, Pat Chrisman. Pat trained silent film star Tom Mix's horse. Chrisman became interested in motion pictures, and got herself film parts, including parts working with Tom Mix himself. She rode horses in films and trained many animals, such as horses, lions, leopards, and others.[2] In 1953, Pat died and that led Chrisman to pursue a different dream she'd had. She had always wanted to be a nurse. In 1954, at age 59, she entered the profession and accepted a position at the Comanche County Memorial Hospital in Lawton, Oklahoma. With her past profession not completely out of mind, she brought her scrapbooks to the hospital to share with co-workers and patients.
