This is a tobacco silk, designated S23 by Jefferson Burdick in his book, "The American Card Catalog". It depicts the flag, song, seal and yell of Tulane University, officially known as The Tulane University of Louisiana, located in New Orleans, LA.

Mr. Burdick estimated the dates of these silks to be 1912-1915.

These silks were distributed in packages of Richmond Straight Cut Cigarettes, manufactured by Allen & Ginter, a subsidiary of the American Tobacco Company of Richmond, VA.

There is fraying at the top and bottom of the silk, please see the photograph.

This silk has the Tulane flag, its song, entitled "Tulane Alma Mater", with the lyrics, "Come fill up your cup, And fill it again, Come, master your trumpets and call up your clan; Fling out the wild chorus and shout it again, For it's up with the banner of Bonnie Tulane!",
The Tulane University of Louisiana seal and motto in Latin, "Non Sibi Sed Suis", (in English, Not for oneself, but for one's own", and Tulane's yell, "Hullabaloo, Hooray! Hullabaloo, Hooray! Hooray, Hooray! Varsity, varsity, T.A.A., T.A.A., T.A.A., Varsity, Varsity, T.A.A., Tulane."

I am not positive about the meaning of "T.A.A." in the Tulane yell, but the Tulane Alumni Association was founded in 1898, approximately fifteen years before this silk was made.

The bottom of the silk has the factory information, " Factory No. 64, 2d Dist. N.Y."

This is the only Tulane S23 silk that I have seen.
