The Unknown Goddess, Humbert Wolfe, pub. Methuen, 1925 first edition. 94 pp. Dusty pink, paper-covered boards, black cloth spine with label. Jacket is complete with mild grubbiness, now in protective acetate sleeve. A very good copy of this scarce collection of Wolfe's poems. Wolfe's reputation has long been in decline but people like Stephen Fry and Louis de Bernieres have tried to bring him back into public consciousness. Wolfe was not a modernist like Auden, but he was a distinctive, quiet, civilised voice and before his untimely death at 55 in 1940 he was amongst the most popular poets of his day.
