This coin was minted following the downfall of Norse rule in Dublin and the overthrowing of Sihtric Silkbeard in 1036.
With Sihtric exiled back to England the coinage of Dublin began to deteriorate, previous coins which bore the name of Sihtric began being minted with blundered legends of unknown meaning.
The style through this period remained undoubtedly good and the metal quality remained high.
This penny likely represents an early issue of the phase three coinage struck under Echmarcach mac Ragnaill or Ímar mac Arailt.
These two kings contested the throne over the coming decades with both eventually being deposed - Ireland at the time was the seat of many different kings all vying for supremacy over the emerald isle.
