WHY TO BUY THE SOFIA CERAMICS OF CALTAGIRONE

Because each object rigorously follows 6 long stages of processing,

For each of these phases, we dedicate the utmost care to every detail so that the final product is the result of a unique, inimitable and unaltered work over time.

1) Turning and modeling: Handmade process and Not with moulds.

2) Drying: Gradual and natural without sudden changes in temperature, in order to expel all the water contained in the clay,

3) First firing: With ovens that reach temperatures estimated at around 1000° for 13 hours.

4) Glazing: The products acquire a totally white color based on oxides and kaolin,

Thus ready to pass into the hands of the decorators who will give color and style to the creations.

The colors used in our laboratories are designed and studied both in terms of color tone and effect,

5) Decoration:  The Decorative phase is characterized by giving style to our creations with shades of colors studied and created by us in the laboratory. Colors, shapes and style are the goal to make our SOFIA brand personal.

6) Second firing: The most important where the object acquires brightness and luminosity, thus enhancing shapes and colors.

Through special techniques the chiaroscuro is highlighted on the crystallized effect of the majolica inspired by the great master CARAVAGGIO.

A third phase of black color is then used, thus making our ceramics even more characteristic with a particular reference to the classic style of Caltagirone majolica; always associated with our ideas we give notes and colors that can link the classic with the modern.

For that our laboratory is in Caltagirone and all our creations are stamped with our brand on the base and signed in the fire.

To certify that every single object has gone through the six stages of processing that make it authentic and unalterable over time and which has passed rigorous quality controls.

For this reason the ceramic objects of Caltagirone SOFIA are real artwork.

To decorate all environments, such as Vases holders, decorative sculptures, ornament , containers, fruit bowls . . .

A BIT OF HISTORY

The story of the beautiful Sicilian girl and the legend of the Moor's head

It is said that in Palermo, around the year 1100 (the period of the domination of the Moors in Sicily at the Kalsa), a beautiful girl lived in a palace who loved to spend her days taking care of the flowers and plants on her balcony.

One day, passing through the Kalsa, a young Moor saw the beautiful girl intent on taking care of the plants, fell in love with her, decided to want her for himself, without delay entered the girl's house and declared his love for her.

The girl, struck by so much feeling, returned the love of the young man, but when she learned that the Moor would leave her to return to his lands in the East, where a wife with offspring awaited her, she waited for darkness and as soon as he he put him to sleep, killed him, cut off his head, made a Vase of it where he planted some basil and put it on display outside on the balcony.

Thus, the Moor, unable to leave anymore, would always remain with her. Meanwhile, the basil grew luxuriantly and aroused the envy of all the inhabitants of the neighborhood.

Not to be outdone, they had terracotta Vases built in the shape of Moor's head .

Caltagirone: city of ceramics

The name Caltagirone derives from the Arabic term Qal?at al Ghiran, which means ?Rock of the Vases ?.

The manufacturing of ceramics in the Caltagirone area dates back to the Neolithic.

The imprint of the various peoples who have colonized Sicily over the centuries is also perceived in the ceramic processing, despite this, the potters in their art have always brought out the Sicilian character.

The art of working Sicilian ceramics has been handed down from generation to generation.

The peculiarities of the product depend on the skills of the master potter, his creativity and attention to detail, which is a guarantee of the piece's exclusivity.
