Signature: "Jacob E. Smart/Gen. U.S.A.F. Retd/1969". B/w, 3x5. Jacob Edward Smart (1909-2006) served on the staff of top Army Air Force General "Hap" Arnold early in World War II, with important duties for planning the air war in Europe. In this role he attended the Casablanca summit meeting of Churchill and Roosevelt. Placed in command of the 9th Air Force in the Mediterranean (1943), he planned the destructive but costly mass bomber raid on German oil refineries in Rumania. Flying bombing missions himself despite his access to top secret information, Smart was shot down and captured by the Germans on May 10, 1944. Although he knew details of the forthcoming D-Day invasion, he managed to withhold this information from his captors. After the war, he rose to Commander of U.S. Pacific Air Forces. After his 1966 retirement from the Air Force, he was a NASA administrator. Surface creases. Otherwise, fine condition.
