This 1870 - 1940 model hangs from a wreath of laurel and oak leaves, it features the profile of Marianne on the obverse. 
The ring on the obverse reads; "République Française", with the date 1870. 
The back features the tricolours and the text of Honour and Fatherland.

The National Order of the Legion of Honour / Ordre national de la Légion d'honneur is the highest French order of merit, both military and civil. Established in 1802 by Napoleon Bonaparte, it has been retained (with occasional slight alterations) by all later French governments and regimes.
With Chevalier or Knight's ribbon.
