BERNARD LOUIS BORIONE

BORN 1865

PORTRAIT OF A GENTLEMAN - OIL ON CANVAS

Bernard Louis Borione was a painter figurative works and interior scenes.  He was born in Paris in 1865 & a pupil of his father,  Guillaume-Marie Borione (1816-1887), also a French genre and portrait painter.  His mother, Evariste Luminais (1822-1896), was also a painter. Under their tuition, he developed his ability to produce finely painted works with highly detailed figures and interiors. Genre painting had made a comeback in 19th century France and so had the trend for anti-clericalism.  Borione was part of a group of painters that depicted domestic  scenes with members of the higher echelons of the Roman Catholic Church, especially Cardinals in elegant dress and sumptuous surroundings. His paintings proved fascinating to many members of the French citizenry.

Borione exhibited his paintings at the Salon des Artistes Francais & is thought to have been the illustrator of a book by Henri Gheon, entitled Les Propos Interrompus (published in 1926).
