THE PINE CONES

Since ancient times, LA PIGNA has been found in the entrance gates of ancient noble villas and gardens, monumental cemeteries, facades of churches and convents, up to populate the thrones of kings and popes as a materialization of the soul, the bridge that connects the land to the divine.

The pine cone is the fruit of the pine, it has always and in different civilizations contained within itself the symbolic meanings of life force, immortality, divinity, linked to the tree that generates it together with those of fertility and regenerative force for the seeds it contains.

Sicilian popular tradition believes that it is useful to give pine cones to keep at home as a wish for health and good luck to the family who lives there.

These meanings materialize in the hands of skilled ceramic craftsmen who make large and small pine cones.

Caltagirone: city of ceramics

The name Caltagirone derives from the Arabic term Qal'at al Ghiran, which means Rocca dei Vases .

The manufacturing of ceramics in the Caltagirone area dates back to the Neolithic.

The imprint of the various peoples who have colonized Sicily over the centuries is also perceived in the processing of ceramics, despite this, the potters in their art have always brought out the Sicilian spirit.

The art of Sicilian ceramic manufacturing has been handed down from generation to generation. Today, in the craftsmanship everything is done by hand.
