The Englishman's Boy (2006) Director: John N. Smith. Bob Hoskins, R.H. Thomson, Nicholas Campbell,  Alden Adair. A Canadian production based on Guy Vanderhaeghe's novel about Hollywood's misguided love affair with cowboys and Indians and on a true historical event - the Cypress Hills Massacre - in which nearly two dozen Assiniboine Indians were killed, including women and children. The drama weaves effortlessly in and out of flashbacks to present this history, including Tinseltown's treatment of First Nations people. The irony of the movie is that producer Damon Ira Chance (played by Oscar nominee Bob Hoskins) is determined to show a realistic cowboy movie while wanting Tom Hardwick to be the hero in his film. However, through flashbacks Hardwick is shown to be the villain of the actual incident. Although the script embellishes somewhat upon the known facts (eyewitness accounts at the trials were somewhat contradictory), the essence of the historical event remains intact. (IMDB)
