Caltagirone: city of ceramics

The name Caltagirone derives from the Arabic term Qal'at al Ghiran, which means “Rocca dei Vases”.

Ceramic manufacturing in the Caltagirone area dates back to the Neolithic.

The imprint of the various peoples who colonized the Sicily over the centuries it is also perceived in the processing of ceramics, despite this, ceramists have always brought out the Sicilian character in their art.

The art of Sicilian ceramic manufacturing has been handed down from generation to generation.

Today, in artisanal manufacturing everything is done by hand.

The peculiarities of the product depend on the skills of the master ceramist, by his creativity and attention to detail, which is a guarantee of the exclusivity of the piece.

WHY BUY SOFIA DI CALTAGIRONE CERAMICS.

Therefore each object rigorously follows 6 long manufacturing stages,

For each of these phases we dedicate the utmost care to every detail so that the final product is the result of a unique, inimitable and unaltered work over time.

1) Turning and modeling: to give shape to the majolica, a process carried out by hand and Not with molds.

2) Drying: Our products are subjected to slow, gradual and natural drying without temperature changes, in order to expel all the water contained in the clay,

3) First cookingWith ovens that reach temperatures estimated at approximately 1000° for 13 hours.

4) Enamellingin which the products acquire a totally white color based on oxides and kaolin,

Ready to pass into the hands of decorators who will give color and style to the creations.

The colors used in our laboratories are designed and studied both for color shades and for effect,

5) Decoration:  The Decorative phase is characterized by giving style to our creations with shades of colors studied and created by us in the laboratory. Colors, shapes and style are the goal to make our SOFIA brand personal.

6) Second cooking: The second cooking is the most important phase where everything cooked at the established temperatures acquires shine and brightness, thus enhancing shapes and colors.

Through particular techniques, the chiaroscuro is highlighted on the crystallized effect of the majolica, inspired by the great master CARAVAGGIO.

A third phase of black color is then used, thus making our ceramics even more characteristic with a particular reference to the classic style of Caltagirone majolica; always associated with our ideas we give notes and colors that can link the classic with the modern.

Therefore our laboratory is in Caltagirone and all our creations are punched with our brand on the base and fire-signed.

To certify that every single object has gone through the six processing phases that make it authentic and unalterable over time and which has passed rigorous quality controls.

For this reason the ceramic objects of Caltagirone SOFIA are real artwork.

The story of the beautiful Sicilian girl and the legend of the Moor's head

It is said that in Palermo, around the year 1100 (period of the domination of the Moors in Sicily at the Kalsa), there lived in a palace a beautiful girl who loved to spend her days taking care of the flowers and plants on her balcony.

One day, passing through the Kalsa, a young dark-haired man saw the beautiful girl intent on taking care of the plants. He fell in love with her and decided he wanted her for himself. Without hesitation he entered the girl's house and declared his love for her. The girl, struck by so much feeling, reciprocated the young man's love, but when she knew that the Moor would leave her to return to his lands in the East, where a wife with children was waiting for him, she waited for the darkness and as soon as he As he fell asleep, he killed him, cut off his head, made a Vase of it, planted basil in it and put it on display outside on the balcony.
The dark-haired man, thus, no longer being able to leave, would always remain with her. Meanwhile the basil grew luxuriantly and aroused the envy of all the inhabitants of the neighborhood. Not to be outdone, they had terracotta Vases made in the shape of Moor's head .
