This is a stunning, hand painted Satsuma ginger jar or lidded vase from the late 1800s. It features a millefleur or thousand flowers pattern. In true Japanese tradition, this jar has been broken but carefully pieced back together. This practice of Kintsugi, which translates to join with gold, is the Japanese art of repairing broken objects, often pottery, with a gold lacquer. The resulting product is considered by many to be more valuable than a non-broken piece. I tried my best to photograph where the cracks are. Ginger jar is 5.5 inches tall w lid on.
