Regelbau R612 - Merville Battery Artillery Gun Casement

The Battle of Merville Gun Battery occurred on 6 June 1944, as part of Operation Tonga, part of the Normandy landings, during the Second World War. Allied intelligence believed the Merville Gun Battery was composed of heavy-calibre guns that could threaten the British landings at Sword Beach, only 8 miles (13 km) away.

The Regelbau 612 Casemate is one of three types of casemate present at the Merville Battery in Normandy on June 6th, 1944. This casemate was designed for use with 7.5cm cannons, 8cm FK 30 (r), 10.5cm howitzers, 10.5cm K 331 (f). At Merville it was armed with a 10.5cm LeFH 14/19(f).

This a flanking casemate however at Merville it had a second flanking wall around its gun port, likely due to its intended long distance or indirect use and its proximity to the sea, this extra flanking wall would give the gunners greater protection from incoming bombs or shell fire.
