These towels were and still are used in Ukrainian wedding ceremonies.
This custom goes back to the times of the ancient pre-Christian era of Slavs. To this day, Ukrainian newlyweds are married with embroidered towels. Traditions in different regions of Ukraine are slightly different: in some regions the young couple is held under such towels, while in other regions the newlyweds are asked to take a towel. The embroidery on these embroidered towels protects the newlyweds from spoilage and evil forces.
According to Orthodox Christian tradition, the couple stood on a rushnik (towel) in church, and the priest asked them about the seriousness of their intentions.
A rushnyk (towel) can also be a beautiful rustic home decoration.
