Claude Monet, Berthe Morisot, Christmas, WWII, 1941


This vintage French magazine is issue number 5152, a special Christmas issue of the weekly publication “L’Illustration”, and is dated December 6th, 1941. “L’Illustration”, famous illustrated magazine, was published in Paris between 1843 and 1944. This issue contains ninety-four pages of advertisements, text and images in addition to the cover. The image on the cover is slightly in relief and is a reproduction of “L’Aveugle”, executed in enamel on copper by Mariano Andreu (1888-1976), Spanish painter and sculptor who lived and worked in France. The interior contains luxuriously illustrated articles, certain of which are printed on rigid paper:

-Claude Monet et l’Impressionnisme”, by Georges Lecomte, member of the French Academy, with eight color reproductions of paintings by Monet framed in gold (eight pages).
-Anna Iaroslawna, Reine de France”, by Maurice Paléologue (1859-1944), member of the French Academy, with a composition in color by Serge Ivanoff (1893-1983), Russian painter exiled in France (eight pages).
-Arts du feu”, by Henri Clouzot with color illustrations of ceramic and glass sculptures (four pages).
-L’Enfance vue par Berthe Morisot”, by Marcelle Tinayre (1870-1948), French writer, with ten reproductions in color of paintings by Berthe Morisot (six pages).
-La Naïade endormie”, a story by Pierre Valmigère, French writer, with illustrations in color by Jean Adrien Mercier (1899-1995), French illustrator (eight pages).
-La Nouvelle décoration de la Cathédrale de Vich”, text and images by José Maria Sert (1874-1945), Spanish painter working in Spain and in Paris who created mural paintings for the Vic cathedral in Catalonia (four pages).
-La Petite Princesse Gelide”, story by Albert Samain (1858-1900), French poet, with illustrations in color by Lucien-Victor Guirand de Scevola (1871-1950), French painter (eight pages).

This piece is in good condition with the exception of signs of wear on the cover, including creases and small tears, a small loss on the binding and a few signs of age on the interior pages. Please refer to the detailed photos on this page.
