Antique French Bronze Bas Relief Medal, Musician Angels,

Musical Instruments, Signed Jean Lagrange

This antique French bronze medal is designed in bas-relief on both sides. It is marked with the word “bronze” alongside the image of a cornucopia, the hallmark used since 1880 by the Paris mint, “La Monnaie de Paris”, for all bronze medals it strikes. Both sides are signed by Jean Lagrange (1831-1908), a renowned French medal designer who studied at the Ecole des Beaux Arts in Lyon and then in the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in Paris. Lagrange received the Prix de Rome in 1860. The front of this medal displays the image of three musician angels. The back shows a crown of laurel branches with a trophy composed of musical instruments. The center has the inscription “La Musique Municipale de Vincennes à Armand Vernier” indicating the the medal was awarded to Armand Vernier, a clarinetist, by the concert band of the city of Vincennes, east of Paris. The “Musique municipale de Vincennes” was created in 1874 and changed its name to the “Harmonie de Vincennes” in 1946. This piece is in very good condition with the exception of faint scratches and very tiny dents visible in the photos but hardly perceptible to the naked eye. This exquisitely executed piece will be an excellent addition to you collection or an elegant and charming “French” touch to your décor.
