Antique Henri Chatelain Twin Dial Rotary Map Measurer Opisometer Made In France

This is an instrument for measuring distances on maps. The main dial is calibrated in inches and reads from 0 to 48 inches. The subsidiary dial is calibrated in 'Lines' and reads from 0 to 16.

It has a white metal handle, which is screw threaded and should be removable but is not able to be undone.

Although mainly intended for use with maps, this instrument can also be used to measure distances on any flat surface.

Dating from the late 19th or early 20th century, this instrument was made in France by Henri Chatelain and is, as such, marked on the back of the case ‘Depose HC'.

Measures 50mm (main dial is 29mm diameter), length including handle is 115mm.

In very good condition and appears to be in working order. There is some wear, scratches and staining to metal. As mentioned above the handle is not able to be undone on its screw thread.
