Four gaming tokens in the guise of spade half-guineas from the reign of George III and dated 1788. These were NOT produced in 1788, many were Victorian or later. Imitating the half-guinea of the period, they may have occasionally fooled the unsuspecting. The token is 20mm in diameter and weighs1.9gm. It has a crenellated edge just like the gold coins of the period to prevent clipping by the unscrupulous. The obverse has a stylised portrait of George III, and the reverse has a shield, shaped like a spade, giving rise to its name. The legend on the reverse is "IN MEMORY OF THE GOOD OLD DAYS", which should have prevented any but the illiterate from being duped. The tokens were either brass, or even just brass plated. The tokens in the photos will be the ones sent. Many thanks for looking.
