In fair condition, with minor rubbing and wear to exterior. Some wear to hinges and binding at front, rear, and following p. 96. Frontispiece tissue guard and some early pages loose. Light markings and marginalia. Newspaper diagram of periods inserted at front of book, which has toned the adjacent map and text page. Nicely illustrated with dozens of black-and-white sketches throughout. General age-related toning to pages, along with periodic foxing and wear. A scarce earlier piece by Sir. Flinders Petrie (1853-1942), a British Egyptologist who excavated many of the major Egyptian tombs and archeological sites. Petrie additionally discovered the Merneptah Stele, and deciphered the Proto-Sinaitic Alphabet, which is the common ancestor of almost all Western and Near Eastern alphabetic scripts.
