A film based on a novel by Vladislav Vancura (author of "Marketa Lazarova").
By Oscar director Jiri Menzel ("Closely Watched Trains").
The end of old times takes place just after the First World War at the Kratochvíle castle, where the Russian emigrant Megalrogov arrives. The elegant man soon unmasks himself as a modern baron Prášil and, despite his obvious untrustworthiness, nevertheless has an irritatingly attractive effect on modern rich people... The basic theme of Vančur's story, the conflict between the old and the new world, thanks to the care of Jiří Menzel and screenwriter Vratislav Blažek, organically merges with the feelings of nostalgia associated with the idea of the old golden times.
