Antique Memento Mori Pendant Medallion on Vintage Silver Chain - Weeping Angel of Amiens 25mm

A very charming and poignant memento mori silver medallion on a good vintage silver chain.

The iconic image is the weeping Angel of Amiens, originally a sculpture by Nicholas Blasset completed in 1628. Souvenirs and statuettes of the weeping angel were sold at Amiens Cathedral and were especially popular among soldiers during World War I, who responded to the image's sentimentality and Christian symbolism. Text reads: D'apres N. Blasset d'Amiens  It is signed to the right by Gaudin & Dubray, a Paris foundry that produced medals and jewellery from 1901-1914. The weeping angel represents grief, or mourning for an untimely death. The skull represents mortality, and the hourglass represents the swiftness of time and the cycle of life and death.  Called the Weeping Angel, it depicts a despondent cherub with his left hand on an hourglass and his right elbow on a skull.

There are French silver hallmarks punched to the medal loop (see pics). The medallion measures 25m across, with a 9mm bail and weighs 6.9g. The vintage silver chain is stamped STERLING to the clasp, and measures 45cm or 17.5".
