Quadrant (from Latin quadraus or quadrantis - fourth part) is an artillery goniometer device used to adjust the elevation angle of a gun barrel when firing.
Invented by Italian mathematician Niccolo Tartaglia.
A mechanical quadrant with level K-1 is designed for measuring and setting tilt angles in the vertical plane from 0 to 90°.
The angle measurement range is from 0-00 to 15-00 divisions of the protractor (DU).

The quadrant consists of a frame with mutually perpendicular supporting platforms (size 110x30 mm), a gear sector, a guide arc and a slider with an ampoule.
The gear sector allows you to install the guide arc at certain angles to the support pads with a resolution of 0-25. The position of the guide arc is fixed by a pointer clamp inserted between the teeth of the sector.
On the guide arc there is a motor with an ampoule, which moves along the arc using a handwheel. In addition, the engine has an adjusting nut and screw, with which the position of the ampoule is adjusted.
To measure the angle values, there are scales on the gear sector and the guide arc, and marks on the pointer and slider.
To give the trunk a given angle it is necessary:
- using a ruler and a protractor carriage, set those values on the coarse and fine scales that in total will give the required angle;
- install the quadrant with the base with the inscription “On target from 0 to 7-50” (or another base, depending on the elevation angle) on the control platform of the breech clip along the mark so that the arrow on the base is directed to the muzzle of the barrel;
- by rotating the flywheel of the gun lifting mechanism, bring the quadrant level bubble to the middle, the barrel will be given the specified angle.
This device is in excellent working condition. Vintage USSR 70-80s.
