Item 483602 ◊ 1941 Army Song Book - Published by the Secretary of War - Many Well-known Songs

A patriotic and unique "1941 Army Song Book - Published by the Secretary of War For the Soldiers."  The book  measures approx. 6” x 4-3/8” (15 cm. x 11 cm.)  And it contains 64 pages.

There are a wide variety of songs, many patriotic, such as "The Star Spangled Banner" and "America the Beautiful."   Some of the songs go back to other wars, such as"Yankee Doodle" from the Revolutionary War, "The Battle Hymn of the Republic" from the Civil War, "The Caissions Go rolling along" from the Spanish-American War, "Pack up our Troubles in your old kit bag." from WWI.   As a matter of fact this is acknowledged by the drawing on the cover of the book which depicts soldiers from many eras of the history of the USA … all singing their hearts out!

There are also some are religious songs, because as the saying goes, "There are no atheists in fox holes:" God of our Fathers.  And of course there are several of the songs from the various branches of the military: Anchors Aweigh, The Army Air Corps., The Infantry, The Marine's Hymn, Song of the Signal Corps, and finally "You're in the Army now" (not exactly the official song, but every soldier knew it.)

The book has 67 songs and room to write more in.   The USA War Department was clearly aware that singing was a way to help the soldiers keep their spirits up and help morale.   That's why many of the other songs in the book are nostalgic, such as "My wild Irish Rose, and Carry me back to old Virginny.""My Wild Irish Rose",  Let me call you Sweetheart", and "The Man on the Flying Trapeeze." 

This book is in about the average condition you would expect for something that quite possibly went to war.    The book had obviously been folded in half to fit in a pants pocket, because it has a crease.  There is some mild soiling, and some of the corners are bumped slightly.   It is actually in pretty clean, and good condition for a used book that is 83 years old.
