Heavy CH-54A helicopters in Vietnam were used primarily for transport operations, but sometimes they acted as carriers of heavy-duty M-121 bombs. Such bombs were partially modified by adding an extended nose detonator, which provided an explosion height of about 3 feet from the ground. They used bombs to quickly clear the forest for an airfield for helicopters. One such combat operation was carried out by a CH-54A helicopter from Phu Bai Air Base (also known as Camp Hochmuth*), located in central Vietnam.
The US Armed Forces began operating this base back in 1963, initially housing a radio station for communications units. The base was subsequently used by US Marines, paratroopers and special operations forces. An airfield was equipped here, for the construction of which M8A1 steel airfield slabs were partially used. At one time, US Marine Corps planes and helicopters were also based at the airfield. The Phu Bai base was frequently attacked by the Viet Cong, but continued to be operated by the US military until the end of 1972.
