Large and unusual antique copper engraved map of SLOVENIA and CROATIA, by Matheus SEUTTER (1678-1757). 

The map is centered on Ljubljana (Laubach in the map), with Trieste and Fiume (modern day Rijeka). It extends from Palmanova, Italy to just north of Zadar, Croatia. The map is very detailed, showing the topography of the region, a lot of towns, rivers, and lakes. An inset at bottom left depicts Lake Cerknica, ancient name Czirnizer See, in southwestern Slovenia. The map is embellished with a decorative title cartouche, coat of arms, numerous angels, and compass rose.



Mattheus SEUTTER began his career as an apprentice under tutelage of JB Homann. Then, he left Homann to establish his own independent cartographic publishing firm in Augsburg. He was one of the most prolific publishers of his time and was honored by the German Emperor Charles VI, with the title of "Imperial Geographer".
