Bryan Ferry Astronaut Food

Original artwork on paper by Noel Fielding, 2010, 87cm x 62cm

A piece that was included in his second exhibition titled, ‘Bryan Ferry vs The Jelly Fox’ at

Gallery Maison Bertaux, London, July the 3rd 2010

The exhibition featured a shrine to Ferry with the sign ‘Church of Ferry’ devoted to drawings and paintings of Bryan Ferry. In a 2010 interview at the opening Fielding explained that the exhibition included, ‘Works on paper, pastel burp-ups, shapes in the darkness and a live happening (masks provided). This is ‘Bryan Ferry Duvet’.’ In describing his obsession with the Roxy Music frontman Fielding said, ‘Bryan Ferry fell on top of me like a giant foam wardrobe. I started to suffocate under his glam rock textures.’

‘Bryan Ferry Astronaut Food’ (2010) is very typical of Fielding’s surreal, gestural, intuitive style of that period. Bright squeezes of paint describe a skeletal, celestial Bryan Ferry, a painterly interpretation of an icon and inspiration to Fielding from the darkness of his own comedic and truly original mind.

‘Bryan Ferry Astronaut Food’ reflects Fielding’s artistic aim to ‘…make comedy with an art school slant, and art that could be funny instead of po-faced.’

Noel Fielding studied fine art at Croydon University under Turner nominee Dexter Dalwood.

Past work has been exhibited in The Royal Albert Hall, the Saatchi Gallery and The Tate Liverpool.

Noel Fielding is an English comedian and actor who first came to fame through his work alongside Julian Barratt in ‘The Mighty Boosh’. Since 2017 he has been the co-presenter on the highly popular and globally successful television series, ‘The Great British Bake Off’.
