With its unusual scallop shell shape and erotic motif, this antique gilded Kutani porcelain shell dish from Japan is a true gem for collectors. Dating to the late Meiji or early Taisho (around the turn of the 20th century), this plate boasts a striking iron red and gilt colour palette with a three-part design. The top right panel features a subtle erotic scene, evident upon closer examination.

Made of porcelain, this plate is a testament to the craftsmanship of Japanese Kutani artisans. The mark on the base indicates that it was made in Kutani, in Japan’s former Kaga province.

The piece does have some damage, which is evident upon close examination. There are four chips around the edge of the piece due to its age and fragility. Close-ups can be seen in the last three photos.
