The first Class F was a development of a locomotive built in 1873 by R & W Hawthorn of Newcastle-on-Tyne. However, the design was so successful that it came to form the basis for the most widespread steam locomotive ever in service in Denmark. The Danish State Railways ended up procuring a total of 120 of these Class F(II) 0-6-0T shunting locomotives. Between 1898 and 1949 the engines were built by various European locomotive manufactures: Borsig, Breda, Hanomag, Henschel, Saronno, Tubitze as well as the Danish companies Hüttemeyer in Copenhagen and Frichs in Aarhus. The locomotives' main duty was shunting, but occasionally the Class F would also be used to haul small freight trains. However, with a modest top speed of 50 km/h (31 mph) a bit of patience was needed. The Class F was in service until the late 1960's.The model is produced by Danish manufacturer F 2010. It is a delightful model that captures the spirit of the original very well. The original was equipped with a complicated Allen-Trick control system which has been successfully replicated on the model, however it is quite fragile. Thanks to the fact that the boiler and the water tanks are in die cast metal the locomotive has good traction. Some details like the chimney and the buffer heads are in brass just as the handrails are in metal.Presently a Class F is owned by the historic Nene Valley Railway. The locomotive is nicknamed 'Tinkerbell' in recognition of the steam-operated bell on the cab roof.
