Carte de visite showing a large family group. They do not look particularly well off. A good composition in our opinion.

Photographed by Joseph Simpson, Sneyd Street, Tunstall. Possibly dates to circa 1870s-1880s.

Card measures, including borders, about 10.5 cm x 6 cm.

A carte de visite usually consists of a small photograph, as is the case here, that is affixed to a backing card. It was a very popular format in the mid to late 19th century.

Condition: various scuffs, scratches and other blemishes to image; has faded a little but still retains good contrast and detail overall in our opinion; some wear to backing card and some surface marks; some silvering of the image mainly around edges - noticeable when held at an oblique angle in front of a bright light. Condition is subjective so please study the photographs carefully to make your own judgement.

The colours in the photographs will not be completely accurate due to variables in the photos or scans we use and individual computer settings.
