eminent pictorial photographers" . One of Britain’s biggest names in
pictorialism, Alexander Keighley was deeply revered in his time.
Alexander
Keighley was born in Keighley, Yorkshire in 1861 the younger son of a
successful textile manufacturer. In 1877 he gained a scholarship to the
Royal College of Science in South Kensington where he was one of the
youngest students. From an early age he has sketched and painted and was
introduced to photography in 1883 and quickly joined the Bradford
Photographic Society. His early influence was Henry Peach Robinson,
first experimenting with albumen and platinum and later carbon prints.
He first exhibited at the RPS in 1889 and was a founder member of the
Linked Ring. He became a fellow of the RPS in 1911 and exhibited
worldwide. He presented solo shows at the Camera Club of New York in
1920 and 1922
and at London’s Royal Photographic Society in 1910 and 1943.
