IT IS IN ABSOLUTELY MINT “DAY IT WAS RECEIVED FROM THE PRINTER” CONDITION!~

THIS IMMEDIATELY WENT OUT-OF-PRINT ON THE DAY OF PUBLICATION!!!

A hardback, collector's edition of two graphic novels, Mutant World (1982) 72 pages, and its sequel Son Of Mutant World (1990) 60 pages, for mature readers.

Full-color, 160 letter-sized pages, with bonus material, including the original covers to Mutant World and Son of Mutant World with and without the logo and bullets (virgin state), a couple of vintage photos of Richard and Jan from the era, and the original introductions to the first Mutant World graphic novel.

These stories have been Out Of Print for more than thirty years, this is the definitive edition. Written by Richard Corben and Jan Strnad, illustrated by Richard Corben.

The back story is this:

Back in 1978, artist Richard Corben and his writing partner Jan Strnad created the graphic novel Mutant World, a post-apocalyptic tale about a mutant named 'Dimento' and his quest for love and survival in a world that no longer harbors love for living things. In the course of his adventure he runs afoul of wild beasts, a religious fanatic, sewer creatures, mad scientists, and devious mutants determined to cheat him out of his hard-won foodstuffs.

This initially ran as a serial in the first eight issues of the comic magazine'1984' (eight pages each issue for a total of 64 pages), published by James WARREN, best known for his legendary Famous Monsters of Filmland, as well as the b&w comic mags Creepy, Eerie and Vampirella. (Warren went bankrupt in 1983, partially as result of Harlan Ellison's winning his suit for plagiarism.)

Unfortunately the publication of this creator-owned graphic novel in '1984' magazine was marred by the machinations of 1984's editor, Bill Dubay, who butchered dialogue, rewrote text, and rearranged panels on a whim, WITHOUT CONSENT OR NOTIFICATION and sometimes blatantly against creators' wishes, making it sexually-offensive and raunchier in a deluded effort to up the 'adult' level so as to (supposedly) compete with Heavy Metal magazine?!?!

(Dubay also infuriated fellow comics legend Wally Wood by destroying the last 12-page story 'The End' that Wood wrote and drew for Warren, physically cutting the original art into two 6-page stories 'Quick Cut' and 'One Night Down On The Funny Farm', and rewriting all the text so that one had nothing to do with the other, nor anything to do with the original story!)

The Mutant World story was finally published as intended - restoring the original dialogue/text AND ADDING EIGHT NEW PAGES to deepen the story and smooth the transitions between chapters (bringing the total to 72 pages) a few years later when Corben's own imprint Fantagor Press published it in 1982, both as a limited signed & numbered hardcover of 100 copies (actually the rarest of all Corben limited signed & numbered books) and as a trade paperback.

The sequel, Son Of Mutant World saw its only previous publication in five issues of a comic book of that same title, twelve pages per issue, for a total of 60 pages, that was also published by Corben's Fantagor imprint during 1990.

The story centers on Dimento's grown daughter, Dimentia, her companion bear, Ollie, and a handful of other survivors on their journey to find safe haven on an island besieged by a mutant gang and brain-sucking plants.

The first two episodes were printed in color, the last three in black-and-white (unfortunately all poorly on pulp paper which muddied the color work and the b&w halftones).

For this edition, a combination of high-quality paper, and beautiful coloring/recoloring of the ENTIRE story by professional colorist Beth Corben (Richard's daughter) makes it the very FIRST TIME IT HAS EVER BEEN SEEN/PRINTED AS CORBEN INTENDED IT!
