From the reading room, Folger Shakespeare library
Washington DC
Created by the stained glass guild
The Folger library, near the nations capital, supports numerous academic programs, publications, exhibitions, theatrical productions, lecture series, poetry readings, and musical programs. The library is dedicated to scholarship. In the reading room, stained glass window by Nicola D’Ascenzo depict the seven ages of men speech from Shakespeare’s play, as you like it.
The seven ages of men stained glass tableau is created in the same manner as stained glass crafted just before Shakespeare’s lifetime. Artesian of the stained glass guild have researched the techniques and materials used through the 15th century when the art of making authentic extended glass was being perfected.
Each tableau receives 18 separate layers of transparent enamel, individually applied to achieve a richness and depth of color faithful to the original masterpiece.
After the colors are in place, artesian fire the glass and a special kiln, permanently fusing the enamel with the rolled cathedral glass.
This special tableau is mounted in a handcrafted walnut frame inspired by the original window of the Folger library
