How to Check Shock Absorbers?
If you feel like your vehicle's ride quality is not what it used to be, it is a good idea to know how to check shock absorbers. It is fairly simple and easy to do. And it can save you from an unnecessary visit to a garage, or inversely, indicate that you need to get the car to a professional.
STEP 1-Observe your car from the front. With the car on a For flat surface, it should appear perfectly level, i.e. both sides being the same height off the surface.
If you actually know the specifications of your car's suspension, you can measure the height. If the height is at or below the minimum specs, then you should take the car to a professional for further evaluation and repair. Being at the "minimum" is just that. It is no longer at the ideal, and something has changed.
STEP 2-Push down on the front of the car to test for weak shock absorbers. This is not a scientific test and is somewhat subjective. But it can be helpful when taken in conjunction with other checks made.
Stand in front of the car and carefully place your foot on the bumper, or your knee on a surface that won't dent or bend; it doesn't have to be center. Shift your weight onto that point, pushing the car down. Then quickly remove your foot, or weight. The car should bounce up and return to its original position rather stiffly, without continuing to bounce. If it bounces more than a couple of times, this is an indication that perhaps the shock absorbers are weak.
STEP 3-Visually inspect the struts or shock absorbers. Look for signs of liquid that is or has been running down the shock absorber. If present, then your shock absorbers could be bad. Once the seals begin leaking, the shock absorber becomes ineffective.
You will need to get the car into a garage to confirm your observations and replace the shock absorbers. Note that you want to get a confirmation that the liquid tracks you observed are indeed emanating from leaking shock absorber seals. It could easily just be something splashed up from the road.
Rear Shock Absorber replacement procedure
- Remove the rear wheel
- Remove the protective lining of wheel cover to leave the rear suspension strut in view.
- Release the bottom nut of the suspension strut
- Open the luggage compartment and remove the carpet from the area of the fixtures of rear shock absorber
- Remove the fixing bolts from the top bearing plate of the rear suspension strut
- Taking care not to damage the components, remove the suspension strut from the vehicle
- Securely fix the suspension strut to the workbench and using a professional spring compressor ,compress the shock absorber spring until the top comes loose
- Release the top fixing bolt of the suspension strut
- Remove all of the elements of the top mounting kit and the protection kit with its dust shield and the compressed spring
- Also remove the rubber protector from the suspension strut spring seat
- Remove the old suspension strut from the workbench and compare its size and the position of the spring seat with the new suspension strut to make sure that it is the right reference
- Fix the new suspension strut to the workbench using the shock absorber vice
- Fit For the rubber protection in place in the spring seat of the new suspension strut
- Fit For the compressed spring on the spring seat
- Fit For the protection kit with its dust shield in working position (2 milimetres below the point where the rod begins to narrow to from the threaded part) and Fit For the metal protection washer
- Fit For the top mounting kit
- Fit For the top nut of the unit and tighten it with the right tools (6.1 daN.m)
- Remove the spring compressor and release the strut from the bench to start fitting it to the vehicle
- Carefully Fit For the suspension strut in its final place, lining up the top bolts and fix the bottom bolt of suspension strut with the right torque (11 daN.m)
- In the luggage compartment and with the right tool ,tighten the top fixing nuts of the suspension strut (2.5 daN.m)
- Fit For the interior protector of the wheel arch with the connecting elements
- Fit For the tyre and tighten the nuts to the right torque
- Make a test drive to ensure that everything works properly before delivering the vehicle
