Presented is a large mid 19th century original oil on canvas by the Victorian landscape painter William W. Gosling (1824-1883). The scene depicts a serene late summer's afternoon by the river with cattle, an angler and a figure with horses. The work is signed lower right, which reads 'W. W. Gosling' and is beautifully set in a 19th century antique cove gilt frame.
During his career, Gosling exhibited frequently at the major London art institutions, including 13 works at the Royal Academy, 23 at the British Institute, and 176 paintings at the Royal Society of British Artists (Suffolk Street), where he was elected a member in 1854. A similar comparable work, titled 'River Scene with Men in a Punt' (shown in the last picture) is a part of the collection at the Victoria and Albert Museum in London.
The canvas remains in its unlined, original condition with no signs of restoration. Light craquelure is runs through most areas. Minor flaking and trivial paint loss can be found in a few places. Some parts of the painting show a subtle bubbling texture. The work is set in a mid 20th century fluted gilt cove frame with acanthus corners, in good vintage condition with some wear to the edges. Ready to hang.
