Menton is a resort town, port and commune in the south-east of France on the Cote d'Azur of the Mediterranean Sea, the last French city before the Italian border. For centuries, Menton served as theborder between Provence and Genoa. Acquired in 1346 by Charles Grimaldi, lord of Monaco, Menton was ruled by the princes of Monaco. Italian until 1861, came under the control of Napoleon III after a controversial French plebiscite in 1860. At the request of its inhabitants, it was transferred to France by Charles III to recognize the independence of Monaco. During the Second World War, the city was the largest center of the Italian occupation zone of France.
