In fair condition, with rubbing and wear to exterior of boards, primarily along edges and corners. Chipping and losses to cloth on spine. Cracking to front hinge, with board slightly loose at top. Text block remains bound well Bookplate of MacKellar on front pastedown, with signature on top of title page. Light staining remnants to edges and corners of pages. Nicely illustrated throughout, with both full-page plates and small in-text engravings. General age-related toning to pages, along with periodic foxing and wear. Volume I only, with Volume II possibly not issued following the author’s death. A scarce piece by Andrew Jackson Downing (1815-1852), an American architect, writer, horticulturalist, and one of the founding influences of American landscape architecture. Thomas MacKellar (1812-1899) was an influential Philadelphia printer and author, and a member of the publishing house of MacKellar, Smith & Jordan.
