Colonel in the Serbian Armed Forces and in the armies of most countries
is the second officer rank for senior officers in the position of regiment and
brigade commanders and for corresponding administrative, staff and command
duties. The rank of colonel first appeared in France in the 14th century. It
was introduced in the Serbian army in 1830, and it also existed in the Yugoslav
army. During the National Liberation War, it was introduced in the NOV and POJ
on May 1, 1943, and as such existed in the JNA, the Army of Yugoslavia and the
Army of Serbia and Montenegro. In the Navy, the rank of colonel corresponds to
the rank of battleship captain.
