‘Mo’ Mowlam Signed General Election first day cover issued 1.5.1997.

Pictorial image of Big Ben in the centre, which is of course next to the Houses of Parliament.

The Cover has a coloured picture on the cover of new Prime Minister Tony Blair and his wife and three children at the door of 10 Downing Street. He had become the New Labour Prime Minister on 1 May 1997.

He became the country’s youngest leader since 1812 and remains the party’s longest serving occupant of the office.

The Cover has the genuine hand signed signature of Marjorie “Mo” Mowlam. (1949-2005). She was a British Labour Party politician who was the Member of Parliament (MP) for Redcar from 1987 to 2001 and served in the Cabinet as Secretary of State for Northern Ireland, Minister for the Cabinet Office and Chancellor of the Duchy of Lancaster.

Her time as Northern Ireland secretary saw the signing of the historic Good Friday Peace Agreement in 1998. Her personal charisma and reputation for plain speaking led her to be percieved by many as one of the most popular “New Labour”politicians in the UK. When Tony Blair mentioned her in his speech at the 1998 Labour Party Conference she received a standing ovation.
