Joint-stock banking, permitted from 1826, involved greater branching than private banking. It's dominance over the private bank is often thought to be a result of laissez-faire political ideology. The Country Bankers Act of 1826 has been considered by most financial historians to have been a precipice in the history of English and Welsh banking. It stands as the starting point for the rise of share ownership, the end of private banking, and the relative stability of financial institutions. During the early 19th century, the Bank of England held a charter, and was the only bank within the English financial sector to possess one since its founding in 1694.
A joint-stock bank is in direct contrast with a private bank - a joint-stock bank is controlled by it's shareholders.

Two years worth of reports on Joint Stock Banks, with old-hand ink marginalia.
