Out west in '86. Inspired performance, against all odds, from a haggard, frazzled band. Clouds on the horizon. "The nature of what we’re doing is something, which is by its very nature, is non-formulaic. There’s no way that you can make it happen by intention alone. It’s something that you have to sort of allow it to happen, and you have to allow for it to happen.” Jerry Garcia.

Frost Ampitheatre, Stanford University, Palo Alto, California April 30 & May 1 1988, Kzsu (4CD)
The complete 1988 two night stand from Stanford University's Laurence Frost Amphitheater. A great place to see a show. You could hang out under the oak trees and smell the eucalyptus or get down to the front row where there was always room to freak. This was a magic weekend. Saturday : breakout of LTGTR had Jerry smiling all the way through. The triple encore of China -> Rider -> Saturday Night was a treat. Sunday : pure psychedelic insanity on "Other One" and throughout the second set. These shows are '88 gems. Unusual setlists and transcendent vibes throughout.

The Grateful Dead are our religion. This is a religion that doesn't pay homage to the God that all the other religions pay homage to" Ken Kesey. Back to where it all began amid Eucalyptus Grove on a beautiful weekend. On target, sweet and mellow long sets, delivered in spades. Persistent energy, Jerry giving it up throughout.
