Dick's 1st Delivery ! of Early-80's ! Grateful Dead !!! = HOT !!!!!!!  Three-Cheers !!! for " The Eighties !!! " - and right in Hartford, CT ! Style & Fashion !!!  Yeah !!!!! ... ' Down & Dirty ' Fall Tour '83 Live-Dead !!!

Thank You ! Dick's Picks !! for Number Six !!!!!!  This one was released way back in 1996 ( now close-to 30-years ago !?! ), and I can distinctly-remember then being in the midst of an " Early/Mid 80's Dead-Addiction " ( one of my very-very many, self admittedly ! ) right exactly ... when it happened.  My Hartford tapes from both '82 & '84 were indeed Crispy Boards, but both the '83's were audiences that could have definitely used a little ' equalization ' ... let's just say - Ha !  Not bad ( solid Nak / Beta Hi-Fi's ) - but most definitely not 2-track stereo recordings right off the Reels from the Vault !?!!  Yeah Dick - Charrrrge !!!  This was the 1st Dan Healy recording released in this semi-new ( at the time ) Dick's Picks Series, and it demonstrated the degree of both what Dan's knowledge and Early/Mid 80's sound technology could really offer.  I mean at this point, the 1st Soundboard recording on DAT was only just a few years away ( on the 1985 Fall Tour ).  And, as for this performance itself, the Band definitely brings the Heat !!!  As this is a performance that goes ' upward ' all night long and they really-really put some serious live muscle into this one !  I always thought that this performance itself was very " Caveat Emptor " ( to quote Dick ! ), in the fact that it was a true snap-shot of how it would often happen live for the Boys back then in this Early-'80s Era.  There are certainly some early mulligans & extra ball-drops here, early in the 1st Set - which as usual, opened the gateway for really pushing the envelope on late 1st Set material, and then set the stage for being on Fire ! ( & delivering the Goods !! ) for Set 2.  I think it's great that Dick selected this one because yeah there are some off-timings & forgotten lyrics early, but then they really meld & get super tight !  There eventually becomes a Billy / Mickey / Brent / Phil rhythm-unit background that fits like a glove, while Garcia & Weir begin trading turns - just dueling this one out !  Bob is the catalyst, 1st upping the ante with an upbeat Mama Tried > Big River, which serves to Jerry like a nice cup of joe.  One of Bob's early Modulus Black Axe's strikes again during the C.C. Rider, thus pushing for the Bucket > Day Job burner to close One.  Then come the Big-Guns !, right straight out of the gate ... Scarlet > Fire > Estimated > Eyes > Drums > Jam > Other One !!!  Smack, DeeP !!! to Center Field - & way-deep, for that matter.  A heartfelt Stella leads into a hearty Sugar Mag closer with a U.S. Blues Encore too.  This Show just goes from nearly nodding off ( or just waking up ? ) & asleep at the wheel, to the Band aggressively challenging themselves and barnstorming the P.A.'s !!  So perfect, and as mentioned - such a real gutsy pick too by Dick ! to deliver what a certain & distinct quadrant of Deadheads are really truly thirsty for ... the Rock & Roll '80's ! G.D. deeply saturated in Both ! the Blues ... ( sometimes Distortion !! too ) & Rock & Roll !!!  Sometimes it's a little slop that creates a little space & allows the creative juices to flow for the Grateful Dead to work their one & only Brand of Live Magic !!  Another thing too fellow fans, don't forget that this is The Era of " Circus " Magazine - so with that pleasant reminder :  Bobby Ace, Thank You for the Whammy-Bar !!  Yes, I'm in the ' elite ' camp of Fan-Faithful that think you should have never unscrewed it ?!?  Bring back the Whammy ! - Bring Back the Whammy !!  Yeah '80's Live-Dead !!! - just bringing-it !!  Right-on . . . Enjoy !!!!!
