Introduced in 1909, the Lincoln Cent is the longest running series for a 1 cent denomination in U.S. Mint history. The original 1909 obverse design, crafted by artist Victor David Brenner, displayed a profile view of the sixteenth President of the United States, Abraham Lincoln. Brenner also designed the original reverse depicting two stalks of wheat, thus the common name wheat pennies was born. The Lincoln Cent was the first widely circulating design of a U.S. President on a coin, an idea that had been seen as too monarchical in the past, namely by George Washington.

During its long history, the Lincoln Cent has undergone multiple temporary composition changes as well as a few design changes. Brenner's wheat reverse was replaced in 1959 by a depiction of the Lincoln Memorial designed by Frank Gasparro, for the sesquicentennial of his birth year. The Lincoln Memorial reverse was itself replaced in 2009 by four commemorative designs marking the bicentennial of Lincoln's birth. Beginning in 2010, Lyndall Bass's Union Shield design was coined and has not been changed since!

The current obverse design features a right facing portrait of former President Lincoln along with the inscriptions “IN GOD WE TRUST,” “LIBERTY,” and the date. The reverse features the Union Shield design, with inscriptions “E PLURIBUS UNUM,” “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA,” and “ONE CENT.”

This 2018 S Reverse Proof Lincoln Cent was struck at the San Francisco Mint has been certified PF70 RD by NGC! It was issued in the 50th Anniversary U.S. Mint Reverse Proof Set and has an extremely limited mintage of just 199,177!! Additionally, the label has been hand-signed by Lyndall Bass, the U.S. Mint Designer of the Lincoln Shield reverse!
