I purchased this horn from Saxquest in February 2023. It is a GREAT playing example of a NWII, and beautiful as well with the unique engraving and gold plated finish. Here is what Saxquest had to say about it:

• "This is a truly beautiful gold plated C.G. Conn gold plated New Wonder II Chu Berry “Portrait” alto saxophone, serial number 152651. The sax shows off a gorgeous original gold plated finish which is complemented by elaborate floral engraving with a portrait centerpiece. This is easily one of the coolest horns we have in the shop at the moment."
• "The Conn altos from this period featured rolled tone hole construction with a trill G# key, finger nail file G# and a micro tuner neck. This one in particular has the original key pearls and rollers. The alto is in solid physical condition from top to bottom. It does show a modest amount of play time from the years of use but not too bad for a horn made in 1925. Its body tube, bow, bell and bell flare are all in great shape. Looking over the saxophone closely you can see past solder repairs on some of the lower key guards. Its bow cap was also very slightly pushed in but the condition of the bow itself is still excellent. The original Conn neck with micro tuner is with this saxophone. It is in very good condition and has never been pulled down. The micro tuner is free moving and in perfect working order. There is a small wear spot just below the micro tuner on one side."
• "This alto plays with super fast intake of air flow and a tremendous free blowing response. It has a very deep full resonating sound which is deep and complex. The gold plating on the sax also seems to further enhance its already ultra rich sound."

The horn has an older pad job. The pads are currently sealing, and some light setup work has been done as well. The horn is currently in playing condition.

As noted above, it is a very fun horn to play - super responsive and easily fills the room.
